As we all know, the best price is free and that especially applies to college tuition. You can probably guess the biggest source of free money for college. That's right, the government. Getting a government grant often lowers tuition prices by about half. That means that you should be spending more time finding grants than scholarships as they make up a much smaller margin of the cost.
If a grant from the government is what you are looking for, here is what you need to know; there are four main grants available to students. Each grant can be a great help during college and they are each designed a little differently.
The first grant is a Federal Pell Grant. This is the most popular program and you can receive thousands of dollars towards your schools tuition with this grant. The catch for this grant; you probably need to apply for financial aid early to receive the maximum amount you qualify for. The reason for this is that each university only receives a certain amount of money to disburse to their students each year and schools dole it out on a first-come first-served basis. Of course, you also need to be in need of financial help to qualify.
The second main grant is the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant. This money is intended for the students with the most financial need and can award up to four thousand dollars to qualifying students.
The third popular grant is a state grant. Each state has a grant program that distributes free money, mainly for tuition to those in need of monetary assistance. There are some state grants that help student who are studying in certain fields. These grants can be found on your states official website under student aid or education.
The fourth grant is an institutional grant. If the previously mentioned grants do not cover enough of your tuition to make college a possibility for you, your school may be able to help with their own school's grants. If you have made yourself desirable to a school either academically or athletically, this may be another reason for the school to award you a grant. This is sometimes done to bribe potential students to a school by offering a grant instead of making the student take out a loan.
The key to being offered one of these grants it to apply to schools that will see your value instead of applying to a school that can find students like you at a dime a dozen. Unfortunately, you cannot apply for institutional grants. They must be offered by the school.
School is expensive. If you are struggling to pay for food, you may qualify for food stamps.
